December 2014 (2)

MONSTER
pretty quickly I realized
like h i m more than h e r

my father used to say
he would protect me from bullies
but how could he protect me from himself
mum’s swollen bags remind
she took father’s fists
against her face
so I could still have him in my life
his voice at a full volume
yelled my pet name
‘faggot’
I wish a switch existed to turn it down
play that anger with the volume
down to zero

the smell of a washing powder
in the public laundry
reminds me of his strong hands
wringing clothes dry –
these happy memories
can only be stirred by accident (10th December 2014)
